Summary

Acquired cholesteatomas arise from the first branchial groove. This study found that cerebellopontine angle epidermoid tumors also migrate like cholesteatomas, supporting a first branchial groove origin for these tumors.

Background:

  • Acquired cholesteatomas, originating from the tympanic membrane, exhibit migratory behavior.

Observation:

  • Intradural CPA epidermoid tumor cells were cultured in vitro.
  • The migratory behavior of these cultured cells was measured daily.
  • The tissue matrix from CPA epidermoid tumors demonstrated migratory properties in the culture.

Findings:

  • The in vitro migratory properties of CPA epidermoid tumor matrix were indistinguishable from those of acquired cholesteatomas.
  • This suggests a shared migratory cellular mechanism between the two pathologies.
