Summary

Histologic detection of apoptotic figures is a cost-effective and reproducible method for analyzing colorectal carcinomas and lymphomas compared to TUNEL detection. Both methods showed a high correlation, but figure counting is preferred for routine diagnostics.

Background:

  • Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a critical process in cancer development and progression.
  • Accurate detection of apoptotic cells is essential for tumor characterization and prognosis.
  • Histologic methods for detecting apoptotic figures and molecular techniques like TUNEL are available.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of direct apoptotic figure counting versus terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) for detecting apoptotic cells.
  • To evaluate these methods in formalin-paraffin embedded tissues from colorectal carcinomas and lymphomas.

Main Methods:

  • Evaluated apoptotic cell percentages in 39 tumor samples (29 colorectal carcinomas, 10 lymphomas) using both direct apoptotic figure counting and TUNEL.
