Tuberculosis can cause a rare eye condition called periphlebitis. Prompt treatment of systemic tuberculosis led to the regression of ocular signs, preventing vision loss in this patient.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Systemic tuberculosis can present with ocular manifestations.
  • Periphlebitis is a rare ocular complication associated with tuberculosis.

Observation:

  • A visually asymptomatic patient undergoing routine ocular assessment prior to antituberculous therapy was diagnosed with bilateral periphlebitis.
  • Fluorescein angiography revealed vasculitis without retinal edema or non-perfusion.

Findings:

  • Ocular signs of periphlebitis regressed within 2 months of systemic antituberculous treatment.
  • No permanent vision impairment occurred due to prompt intervention.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of ophthalmological assessment in patients with systemic tuberculosis.
