Problem-based learning (PBL) in clinical neurology effectively engaged Chinese medical students in Taiwan. This approach complemented traditional neuroanatomy, proving feasible and rewarding for students and tutors.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Neuroscience Education

Background:

  • Problem-based learning (PBL) is a growing trend in medical education.
  • Chinese students' reserved nature may pose challenges for PBL adaptability.
  • Neuroanatomy is a critical yet difficult subject for medical students.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of PBL for Chinese medical students in Taiwan.
  • To integrate clinical neurology with PBL as a supplement to traditional neuroanatomy.
  • To assess student and tutor satisfaction with PBL in neuroanatomy.

Main Methods:

  • 42 second-year medical students and 7 tutors participated in weekly clinical neurology PBL tutorials.
  • Twelve case reports aligned with the neuroanatomy curriculum were discussed.
  • Student performance was evaluated on preparation, participation, comprehension, and interaction; all participants completed questionnaires.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 90% of students found case materials matched neuroanatomy content.
  • 85% of students and 71% of tutors were satisfied with the PBL sessions.
  • 91% of students and 74% of tutors favored continuing PBL.

Conclusions:

  • PBL in clinical neurology small-group tutorials is feasible and satisfactory for Taiwanese medical students.
  • PBL effectively complements traditional neuroanatomy instruction.
  • Early integration of PBL in medical curricula can enhance learning of basic and clinical sciences.
