Area of Science:

  • Vascular Anatomy
  • Surgical Anatomy
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Aberrant cervical carotid artery (ACCA) is an uncommon anatomical variation.
  • This anomaly presents a significant risk during pharyngeal surgeries due to its proximity to the surgical site.

Observation:

  • Five cases of ACCA were identified and diagnosed using computerized tomography (CT).
  • In all diagnosed cases, the aberrant vessel was an incidental finding and did not correlate with the patients' presenting symptoms.

Findings:

  • CT imaging confirmed the presence and location of the aberrant carotid artery.
  • The study provides illustrative CT images of ACCA cases.
  • A review of relevant literature and embryological origins of ACCA is included.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Radiologists and surgeons must be aware of this anomaly to prevent inadvertent surgical complications.
  • Preoperative identification of ACCA via imaging is essential for patient safety during pharyngeal procedures.
  • Understanding ACCA's embryology aids in recognizing its potential variations.
