Background:

Structured electronic clinical communication is increasingly used in general practice.
Understanding its impact on general practitioners (GPs) is crucial for effective implementation.
Existing literature on these effects requires systematic review.

Purpose of the Study:

To synthesize findings from existing literature on the effects of structured electronic clinical communication in general practice.
To evaluate the evidence supporting the benefits of electronic communication over traditional methods for GPs.

Main Methods:

A systematic literature search was conducted using MEDLINE.
Publications were identified using MESH terms 'Computer Communication Networks' and 'family practice' or 'primary health care', or 'GP'/'GPs'.
30 relevant publications were selected from an initial retrieval of 176.

Main Results:

Of the 30 selected studies, 28 described potential effects of electronic communication.
Only a small number of studies reported demonstrated effects, with even fewer using objective data.
Documented effects spanned communication speed, information content, process changes, quality of care, costs, workload, physician appreciation, confidentiality, and adherence.

Conclusions:

A limited number of studies have directly compared electronic versus paper communication in general practice.
The evidence for significant improvements attributable solely to electronic communication remains scarce.
Current literature does not conclusively demonstrate that electronic communication itself drives positive outcomes.
