Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Immunology

Context:

  • Herpes simplex virus encephalitis (HVE) is a severe neurological condition.
  • Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment and improved patient outcomes.
  • Diagnostic challenges exist in identifying acute HVE promptly.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic utility of a qualitative anti-HVE ELISA test for acute HVE.
  • To determine the time frame for detecting anti-HVE antibodies after symptom onset.
  • To characterize the clinical presentation of patients with presumptive HVE.

Summary:

  • Twenty-four patients with suspected HVE were tested using a qualitative anti-HVE ELISA.
  • Eighteen patients (75%) tested positive for acute HVE.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The majority of positive results were detected around 60 days post-symptomatology, with clinical characteristics outlined.
  • Impact:

    • Highlights the potential of ELISA for HVE diagnosis.
    • Suggests a potential delay in serological confirmation of acute HVE.
    • Provides clinical insights into HVE presentation and diagnosis.
