Summary

This case study highlights conservative management of bilateral choroidal melanoma. Sequential treatment of choroidal nevi and melanomas preserved vision and prevented metastasis.

Background:

  • Bilateral choroidal melanoma is rare.
  • Sequential diagnosis and management present unique challenges.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with sequential bilateral choroidal melanoma diagnosed 20 months apart.
  • The first eye had a juxtapapillary melanoma treated with radioactive plaque.
  • The second eye developed a rapidly growing choroidal nevus managed with diode laser transpupillary thermotherapy.

Findings:

  • Both choroidal melanomas showed significant regression post-treatment.
  • Good visual acuity was maintained in both eyes.
  • No evidence of metastasis or other malignancies was found during follow-up.

Implications:

  • Close monitoring is crucial for patients with bilateral ocular melanocytic lesions.
