Summary

We derived the nuclear dependence coefficient, alpha(q(T)), for Drell-Yan and J/psi production. This coefficient follows a universal form at low transverse momentum, independent of nuclear size (A).

Area of Science:

  • High Energy Physics
  • Nuclear Physics
  • Quantum Chromodynamics

Background:

  • Understanding nuclear dependence is crucial for interpreting particle production in nuclear collisions.
  • Previous models often struggled to universally describe Drell-Yan and J/psi production across different nuclear sizes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To derive and validate a universal functional form for the nuclear dependence coefficient, alpha(q(T)).
  • To demonstrate that this coefficient is determined by fundamental, measurable quantities and is independent of the nucleus size (A).

Main Methods:

  • Theoretical derivation of the nuclear dependence coefficient alpha(q(T)).
  • Analysis of the functional form of alpha(q(T)) at small transverse momentum (q(T)).
  • Comparison of the derived universal form with existing experimental data.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • A universal functional form, alpha(q(T)) = a + b*q(2)(T), was derived for small q(T).
  • The parameters 'a' and 'b' are determined by perturbatively calculable or independently measurable quantities.
  • The derived form alpha(q(T)) is insensitive to the nuclear size (A).

Conclusions:

  • The study presents a novel, universal description of nuclear dependence in particle production.
  • This finding simplifies the interpretation of Drell-Yan and J/psi data in nuclear environments.
  • The results are consistent with existing experimental observations and offer predictive power.
