Summary

Extra dimensions can impact physics at both short and long distances, not just short ones. This study explores models where gravity is five-dimensional at extreme scales but four-dimensional in between.

Area of Science:

  • Theoretical Physics
  • High-Energy Physics
  • String Theory

Background:

  • Standard higher-dimensional theories predict extra dimensions manifest only at short distances.
  • Long-distance physics in these models is typically effectively four-dimensional.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate models with infinite extra dimensions where this standard picture may not hold.
  • To explore scenarios where extra dimensions influence physics at both short and long distances.

Main Methods:

  • Consideration of a five-dimensional model with three 3-branes.
  • Analysis of gravitational behavior at different length scales (short, intermediate, and very long).

Main Results:

  • Demonstration that gravity can be five-dimensional at both short and very long distances.
  • Conventional four-dimensional gravity is shown to operate at intermediate length scales.
  • A phenomenologically acceptable range for four-dimensional gravity validity is achieved without significant parameter fine-tuning.

Conclusions:

  • Models with infinite extra dimensions challenge the conventional understanding of extra-dimensional manifestations.
  • It is possible to construct theories where four-dimensional gravity is valid across a wide range of scales, from microscopic to cosmological.
