Summary

Sleep deprivation (SD) did not significantly increase epileptic activity compared to sleep alone in patients with epilepsy. Mild SD may aid in inducing sleep and drowsiness without medication.

Background:

  • Patients with epilepsy often have normal or unclear interictal epileptiform activity on wake electroencephalogram (EEG).
  • Sleep deprivation (SD) is a potential method to enhance the detection of epileptic activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To retrospectively evaluate the effect of sleep deprivation (SD) on interictal epileptic activity in patients with seizures but normal or unclear EEG findings.
  • To gather preliminary data for a controlled cohort study on SD's impact on epileptic activity.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 19 patients with a history of clinical seizures.
  • Two groups were formed based on EEG protocols: Group 1 (n=5) had polysomnography after SD (with some sleep difficulties); Group 2 (n=14) had polysomnography both with and without prior SD.

  • In Group 1, 4 out of 5 patients showed focal epileptic discharges, with wakefulness after SD appearing less activated than sleep after SD.
  • Group 2's waking EEG recordings after SD did not show a significant activating effect compared to recordings without SD.
