Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Post-anesthesia complications, though rare, require thorough investigation.
  • Hearing impairment is an uncommon adverse event associated with surgical procedures.

Observation:

  • A patient undergoing left total knee and hip replacement experienced severe, unilateral hearing impairment post-general anesthesia.
  • An otolaryngological examination revealed no apparent physical abnormalities in the affected ear.

Findings:

  • The patient's hearing acuity gradually improved.
  • Normal hearing was restored within three days post-operatively.
  • Nitrous oxide, used during anesthesia, was identified as the potential causative agent.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a potential ototoxic effect of nitrous oxide.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Further research is warranted to understand the mechanism and incidence of anesthesia-related hearing loss.
  • Anesthesiologists should consider nitrous oxide's potential impact on hearing, especially in susceptible patients.
