Abstract:
A 78-year-old man with a long history of major depression responded well to a course of ECT but relapsed before maintenance treatments could be started. Addition of lithium carbonate resulted in a sustained remission with maintenance treatments. The combination of maintenance ECT and lithium may be safe and effective in selected cases of refractory depression.
