Summary

Anhedonia, the inability to feel pleasure, is linked to depression in suicide attempters, not a personality trait. This study found anhedonia in suicide attempters was a feature of their depression, not a stable characteristic.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Behavioral Neuroscience

Background:

  • Anhedonia is frequently observed in individuals who have attempted suicide.
  • Previous research suggests a link between anhedonia and suicide attempts.
  • The role of depression as a potential confounder in this relationship requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between anhedonia and suicide attempts in a controlled manner, accounting for depressive symptoms.
  • To determine if anhedonia is a trait characteristic of suicide attempters or a symptom of depression.

Main Methods:

  • The study assessed 73 depressed parasuicides, 30 nondepressed parasuicides, and 104 matched controls.
  • The Revised Physical Anhedonia Scale (PAS) was used to measure anhedonia.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to analyze the data.
  • Main Results:

    • Depressed parasuicides exhibited significantly higher levels of anhedonia compared to controls.
    • Nondepressed parasuicides did not show significantly higher anhedonia than controls.
    • Anhedonia scores accounted for a minimal portion of the variance differentiating parasuicides from controls.

    Conclusions:

    • Anhedonia in individuals who attempt suicide appears to be a symptom associated with depression.
    • The findings suggest that anhedonia is not an independent temperamental trait in suicide attempters.
    • Distinguishing between trait and state anhedonia is crucial for understanding suicide risk and developing targeted interventions.
