Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the characteristics of afterimages induced by coherent laser light.
  • To compare laser-induced afterimages with those from incoherent light sources.
  • To determine the nature (neural vs. photochemical) of these unique visual perceptions.

Main Methods:

  • Ten volunteers were exposed to combinations of blue, green, and red laser light.
  • Simultaneous intrabeam viewing of laser and scene was enabled by a 50/50 mirror.
  • Participants reported immediate and 1-minute post-exposure visual experiences.

Main Results:

  • Immediate afterimages matched the laser's color, not the complementary color.
  • Images were bordered and predominantly red, irrespective of background color.
  • 1-minute post-exposure, images were purple, dark, or absent, with red edges persisting.

Conclusions:

  • Laser-induced afterimages are neural, not photochemical, in origin.
  • Coherency, monochromaticity, and focused intensity of lasers contribute to unique afterimages.
  • These findings differentiate laser afterimages from those of conventional light sources.
