Background:

  • Recent studies suggest infections may suppress allergic responses (atopy) by reducing immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels.
  • The role of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in modulating Th1/Th2 immune responses and its impact on atopy requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and its treatment down-regulate serum total IgE levels.
  • To investigate if this down-regulation is linked to an enhanced Th1 response, using tuberculin skin tests as a marker.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study involving 20 pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients, 19 asthma patients, and 10 healthy controls.
  • Serum total IgE levels and delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) response to tuberculin were measured before and after 6 months of TB treatment.

    • TB patients initially had significantly higher serum IgE levels than healthy controls (282 vs. 126 U/ml).

    • No significant changes in IgE or tuberculin responses were observed in healthy controls or asthma patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Immune responses to Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection effectively down-regulate Th2-mediated immune responses, indicated by decreased IgE levels.
    • The enhancement of Th1 responses during TB treatment may contribute to the observed reduction in allergic responses.
    • These findings suggest a potential link between tuberculosis and a decreased prevalence of allergic disorders.
