Summary
Polydimethylsiloxane chains in thin films exhibit uniaxial reorientation. Film thickness influences dynamics, showing rapid segment diffusion and planar orientation dependent on chain entanglement.
Area of Science:
- Polymer physics
- Surface science
- Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy
Background:
- Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is a widely used silicone polymer.
- Understanding polymer chain dynamics in confined environments is crucial for material science.
- Surface interactions significantly alter polymer behavior.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the dynamics of molten polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chains confined between air and a solid surface.
- To determine the effect of film thickness on chain dynamics and orientation.
- To explore the role of chain entanglements in confined polymer behavior.
Main Methods:
- Deuterium Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was employed.
- Molten PDMS films of varying thicknesses were studied.
- Analysis focused on chain segment reorientation and diffusion.
Main Results:
- PDMS chain segments undergo uniaxial reorientation around the surface normal.
- Film thickness dictates dynamic uniaxiality, involving rapid segment diffusion between surfaces.
- A high degree of planar orientation is imposed by the surfaces.
- Segmental ordering is observed within a thickness range dependent on chain entanglement.
Conclusions:
- Confined PDMS chains exhibit distinct dynamic behavior compared to bulk.
- Surface interactions and film thickness are key factors controlling polymer chain orientation.
- Chain entanglement influences the extent of observable segmental ordering in thin films.

¹H NMR: Interpreting Distorted and Overlapping Signals
Spin systems where the difference in chemical shifts of the coupled nuclei is greater than ten times J are called first-order spin systems. These nuclei are weakly coupled, and their chemical shifts and coupling constant can generally be estimated from the well-separated signals in the spectrum.
As Δν decreases and the signals move closer, the doublets appear increasingly distorted. The intensities of the inner lines increase at the cost of those of the outer lines as the signals are slanted or...

¹H NMR of Conformationally Flexible Molecules: Variable-Temperature NMR
The axial and equatorial protons in cyclohexane can be distinguished by performing a variable-temperature NMR experiment. In this process, except for one proton, the remaining eleven protons are replaced by deuterium. The deuterium substitution avoids the possible peak splitting caused by the spin-spin coupling between the adjacent protons. The remaining proton flips between the axial and equatorial positions.
