Background:

  • The standard patch test concentration for neomycin sulfate is 20% in petrolatum, applied occluded for 48 hours.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the diagnostic efficiency of lower neomycin sulfate concentrations with the standard 20% concentration.
  • To evaluate different vehicles (petrolatum and demineralized water) and application methods for neomycin sulfate patch testing.

Main Methods:

  • 16 neomycin-sulfate positive subjects were retested using serial doses (0.4 to 0.0085 mg/cm2) on polyester squares applied via tape and foil.
  • Tests were also conducted using 20% neomycin sulfate in petrolatum within Finn Chambers and applied directly with transparent foils.
  • Readings were taken between 3 and 264 hours post-application.
