Summary

Object-based attention effects persist regardless of whether attention is focused or distributed. This challenges previous findings suggesting these effects only occur with distributed attention.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Visual Attention Research

Background:

  • Previous research indicated object-based attention effects diminish under focused attention.
  • Lavie and Driver (1996) specifically reported object-based effects disappear with focused attention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To replicate Lavie and Driver's (1996) findings on object-based attention.
  • To investigate whether object-based effects are contingent on the spatial distribution of attention.

Main Methods:

  • Replication of Lavie and Driver's (1996) experimental paradigm and stimuli.
  • Two experiments were conducted to assess object-based effects under both distributed and focused attention conditions.

Main Results:

  • Lavie and Driver's (1996) finding of object-based effects with distributed attention was replicated.
  • Crucially, object-based effects were also observed under focused attention, contradicting Lavie and Driver's (1996) claim.
  • The magnitude of object-based effects did not differ significantly between distributed and focused attention conditions.

Conclusions:

  • The initial spatial setting of attention does not preclude object-based constraints on attention distribution.
  • Object-based effects are robust and observable under both focused and distributed attention conditions.
