    Summary

    Wart virus antigen presence varied by anatomical site, with higher incidence in foot warts. While some patients had antigen, not all had antibodies, but antibody presence indicated antigen.

    Background:

    • Warts are common skin lesions caused by human papillomaviruses (HPVs).
    • The immune response to HPV infection, including antibody and antigen presence, is not fully understood.
    • Understanding antigen and antibody distribution can inform diagnosis and treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the incidence and location of wart virus-specific antibodies and virion antigens in patients with warts.
    • To correlate antigen presence with antibody levels and types (IgM, IgG).
    • To examine the relationship between wart location and antigen detectability.

    Main Methods:

    • Analysis of wart samples from different anatomical sites for virus antigen.
    • Detection of virus-specific antibodies in patient sera using rabbit antiserum and human sera.
    • Immunohistochemical staining to identify antigen location within wart tissue layers.
    • Serological analysis for IgM and IgG antibody classes.

    • Not all warts contained detectable viral antigen.

    • The immune response in patients with warts is complex, with a dissociation between antigen presence and antibody detection in some cases.
    • IgM antibodies, including a wart cell-specific IgM, play a significant role in the immune response to HPV infection.
