Summary

Exhaled ethane, a marker of oxidative stress, is elevated in asthma patients and reduced with steroid treatment. This finding suggests ethane may serve as a useful noninvasive biomarker for asthma management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure exhaled ethane levels in asthmatic subjects.
  • To compare exhaled ethane with exhaled nitric oxide (NO).
  • To investigate the correlation of exhaled ethane with asthma severity and steroid treatment.

  • Exhaled ethane was collected via controlled exhalation and analyzed by gas chromatography.
  • Exhaled nitric oxide (NO) was measured using chemiluminescence.
