Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Pharmacology
  • Cognitive Psychology

Background:

  • Topiramate is an effective antiepileptic agent.
  • Cognitive side effects are a concern with antiepileptic drugs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of topiramate on cognitive functions.
  • To assess the impact on intellect, memory, language, and perceptual processing.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study comparing neuropsychological test scores.
  • 18 patients on topiramate vs. 18 controls matched for age and IQ.
  • Assessed verbal IQ, memory, fluency, and perceptual processing.

Main Results:

  • Topiramate group showed significant cognitive decline, especially in verbal IQ, fluency, and learning.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Comparison group had no significant changes.
  • Withdrawal/reduction of topiramate led to improvements in verbal fluency, learning, and digit span.
  • Conclusions:

    • Topiramate has a negative impact on cognition, particularly verbal processing.
    • Subjective patient complaints align with objective test findings.
    • Further research is needed on factors like serum levels and comedication.
