Endocrine Signaling

Endocrine cells produce hormones to communicate with remote target cells found in other organs. The hormone reaches these distant areas using the circulatory system. This exposes the whole organism to the hormone but only those cells expressing hormone receptors or target cells are affected. Thus, endocrine signaling induces slow responses from its target cells but these effects also last longer.

Background:

  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) syndromes are rare inherited disorders in humans characterized by tumors in endocrine glands.
  • Understanding these syndromes in animals can provide insights into human disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets.

Observation:

  • A 12-year-old mixed-breed dog presented with anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, polyuria, polydipsia, regenerative anemia, and hypoglycemia.
  • Post-euthanasia examination revealed multiple endocrine neoplasms: an insulinoma, bilateral adrenocortical adenocarcinomas, and an aortic paraganglioma.

Findings:

  • Histopathological, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural analyses confirmed the diagnoses of the endocrine tumors.
  • The combination of tumors observed in the dog closely resembles the human MEN syndrome.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the occurrence of multiple endocrine neoplasms in dogs, presenting a valuable animal model for studying human MEN.
