Summary

Both acrylic and silicone intraocular lenses (IOLs) with sharp edges effectively prevent posterior capsule opacification (PCO) by inhibiting lens epithelial cell migration. Material composition did not significantly impact PCO prevention in this study.

Background:

  • Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a common complication after cataract surgery.
  • Intraocular lenses (IOLs) with specific optic edge designs are investigated for their potential to mitigate PCO.
  • Sharp-edged IOLs aim to create a physical barrier against lens epithelial cell (LEC) migration.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of acrylic and silicone intraocular lenses (IOLs) in preventing posterior capsule opacification (PCO).
  • To evaluate the role of sharp rectangular optic edges in PCO prevention.
  • To determine if IOL material influences the preventive effect on PCO.

Main Methods:

  • Phacoemulsification followed by implantation of an acrylic IOL (AcrySof) in one eye and a silicone IOL (CeeOn 911) in the contralateral eye of rabbits.

    • The formation of a discontinuous capsular bend by sharp-edged IOLs appears to induce contact inhibition of migrating LECs.
    • IOL material composition is less critical than optic edge design for preventing PCO through this mechanism.
