Summary

Intermittent rifampicin therapy for tuberculosis showed similar cure rates but a higher relapse rate compared to daily treatment. More research is needed to confirm effectiveness of intermittent tuberculosis chemotherapy.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Tuberculosis (TB) incidence is increasing globally.
  • Rifampicin-containing regimens are effective for TB treatment.
  • Intermittent drug administration may improve treatment adherence.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of intermittent (2-3 times/week) versus daily rifampicin-containing short-course chemotherapy for pulmonary tuberculosis.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of randomized and quasi-randomized controlled trials.
  • Searched multiple databases and contacted experts.
  • Included trials comparing intermittent vs. daily rifampicin regimens in pulmonary TB patients.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • One trial with 399 patients was analyzed.
  • No significant difference in cure rates between intermittent and daily regimens.
  • Higher relapse rates were observed in the intermittent therapy group (5/199) compared to the daily group (1/200).

Conclusions:

  • Insufficient evidence exists to confirm the equivalence of intermittent and daily rifampicin chemotherapy for pulmonary TB.
  • Larger randomized controlled trials are necessary to establish the efficacy of intermittent regimens.
