Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Medicine
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Pediatric Endocrinology

Background:

  • Unilateral virginal breast hypertrophy is a rare condition characterized by rapid, excessive breast growth in adolescent females.
  • Distinguishing it from neoplastic conditions like cystosarcoma phyllodes and fibroadenoma is crucial for appropriate management.

Observation:

  • A 16-year-old female presented with rapid, unilateral breast enlargement over 5 months.
  • Mammography suggested cystosarcoma phyllodes, and fine-needle aspiration biopsy indicated giant fibroadenoma, with some suspicious features.
  • Histopathological examination post-surgery confirmed virginal hypertrophy.

Findings:

  • Surgical intervention involving subcutaneous mastectomy and subpectoral silicone gel implant placement was performed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The patient achieved stable breast volume with no recurrence or contralateral breast growth at 4-year follow-up.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of thorough histopathological evaluation for accurate diagnosis of breast hypertrophy.
    • Successful surgical management and reconstruction can provide satisfactory cosmetic and functional outcomes for patients with virginal breast hypertrophy.
