Summary

Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) causes adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) and a neurological disorder, HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Neuropathology reveals T-cell infiltration and degeneration, suggesting a T-cell-mediated inflammatory process drives HAM/TSP.

Background:

  • Human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is a pathogenic retrovirus linked to adult T-cell leukemia (ATL).
  • HTLV-I is also associated with a chronic neurological disorder, HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), observed in Japan and Caribbean islands.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To elucidate the neuropathological mechanisms underlying HAM/TSP.
  • To determine the role of HTLV-I infection in the pathogenesis of HAM/TSP.

Main Methods:

  • Autopsy findings were analyzed to understand the chronic inflammatory nature of HAM/TSP.
  • Detailed neuropathological analysis included examination of cellular infiltration, tissue degeneration, T-cell activity, and HTLV-I localization.
