Summary

Maximal eccentric force is hard to maintain across the full range of motion. Elbow flexor muscle activation and EMG frequencies vary with joint angle and preactivation, challenging theories of fast motor unit recruitment in eccentric actions.

Area of Science:

  • Biomechanics
  • Human Physiology
  • Neuromuscular Function

Background:

  • Understanding muscle force and activation is crucial for biomechanical analysis.
  • Elbow flexor muscles are key for upper limb movement and function.
  • Preactivation strategies influence muscle performance during contractions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate elbow flexor muscle force and activation during eccentric, concentric, and isometric actions.
  • To analyze the effects of preactivation on muscle performance across different movement velocities and joint angles.

Main Methods:

  • Measured force, average electromyography (aEMG), and EMG power spectrum.
  • Utilized constant movement velocities (1-4 rad x s(-1)) and varying joint angles.
  • Examined muscle responses under preactivated eccentric, concentric, and isometric conditions.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Concentric actions showed lower force and higher aEMG at 110 degrees compared to eccentric/isometric.
  • EMG activity differences varied with joint angle (55 vs. 110 degrees).
  • Mean frequency (MF) was higher in concentric actions at faster velocities and 110 degrees.

Conclusions:

  • Maximal eccentric force is difficult to sustain throughout the range of motion.
  • EMG activity and frequency in eccentric actions can be lower than concentric, depending on conditions.
  • EMG power spectrum results do not support selective fast unit activation in maximal eccentric contractions.
