Summary
Lens epithelial cell (LEC) proliferation in human eyes with posterior capsule opacification (PCO) was studied. Mitotic activity returns to normal levels in PCO, but removing lens fibers significantly increases LEC proliferation.

- Lens epithelial cells (LECs) exhibit high mitotic activity post-extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE) in vitro.
- Long-term in vivo LEC proliferation after ECCE and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation remains uncharacterized.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the in vivo mitotic activity of LECs in human post-mortem eyes with posterior capsule opacification (PCO).
- To determine factors influencing LEC proliferation in the presence of PCO and IOLs.

- Human donor eyes with PCO were cultured for 1 or 7 days.
- Bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) and Ki67 markers were used to assess mitotic activity.
- Some specimens underwent IOL and lens fiber removal prior to culture.
