Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) affects 0.3% to 2% of pregnancies.
  • It is characterized by severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the epidemiology, etiology, symptoms, complications, treatment, and perinatal outcomes of HG.
  • To synthesize current literature on HG.

Main Methods:

  • MEDLINE search of English literature from 1966 to January 2000.
  • Keywords used: hyperemesis gravidarum, nausea and vomiting, pregnancy.

Main Results:

  • HG is multifactorial, involving hormonal changes, gastrointestinal dysmotility, and potentially Helicobacter pylori.
  • Treatment is primarily supportive with antiemetic medication.
  • Perinatal outcomes appear unaffected by HG.

Conclusions:

  • Hyperemesis gravidarum is a complex condition with multiple contributing factors.
  • Supportive care and antiemetics are key treatment strategies.
  • HG does not seem to negatively impact perinatal outcomes.
