Background:

  • Evaluating the accuracy of EP-performed ultrasound after a defined training period is necessary.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the accuracy of emergency physician ultrasonography.
  • To assess the effectiveness of a 16-hour introductory ultrasound course for EPs.
  • To establish minimum training benchmarks for emergency ultrasound.

Main Methods:

  • Phase I: 80 health professionals completed a 16-hour emergency ultrasound curriculum (lectures and hands-on).
  • Participants took pre- and post-tests with 24 emergency ultrasound images.
  • Phase II: Evaluated ultrasound examinations performed by postgraduate-year-2 (PGY2) residents over 10 months.

Main Results:

  • Post-test scores significantly improved from pre-test scores (84% vs. 65%, p < 0.05).
  • PGY2 residents achieved high accuracy in ultrasound interpretation: 92.4% sensitivity, 96.1% specificity, and 94.6% overall accuracy.
  • Continued strong performance was observed on follow-up written tests.

Conclusions:

  • Emergency physicians can achieve high accuracy in focused ultrasonography after a 16-hour introductory course.
  • A 16-hour ultrasound course provides a foundational level of competency for EPs.
  • This training model supports the integration of bedside ultrasound into emergency practice.
