Background:

Assessing the prevalence of physical violence exposure in an urban population.
Understanding healthcare seeking behaviors and legal reporting among assault victims.

Purpose of the Study:

To estimate the one-year incidence of physical violence exposure in Bergen, Norway.
To determine the proportion of victims seeking medical treatment and pressing legal charges.

Main Methods:

A structured telephone interview methodology was employed.
Data collection was integrated into monthly opinion polls.

Main Results:

1.4% of 3,005 interviewed residents reported physical violence exposure in the past year.

Among victims, 24% sought medical treatment and 39% pressed legal charges.

Reported rates for other victims indicated 65% sought medical care and 52% pressed charges.

Conclusions:

A significant proportion of physical assault victims do not access medical services or pursue legal action.
Findings suggest potential underreporting and unmet needs within the victim support system.
