Background:

Aplastic anemia (AA) is a rare but serious condition affecting bone marrow.
Ocular manifestations in AA can be significant but are not widely studied.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate and document the spectrum of ocular findings in patients diagnosed with aplastic anemia.

Main Methods:

A cohort of 18 patients with aplastic anemia underwent comprehensive ophthalmic examinations.
Ocular findings were systematically recorded and analyzed.

Main Results:

Retinal hemorrhages, including nerve fiber layer and preretinal types, were observed in 67% of patients.
Cotton wool spots (38%) and optic disc edema (6%) were also noted.
Preretinal hemorrhages served as the initial presenting sign in 13% of cases.

Conclusions:

Unexplained retinal hemorrhages warrant a thorough blood profile to rule out aplastic anemia.
Patients with aplastic anemia should avoid activities that increase intraocular pressure, such as ocular massage and Valsalva maneuvers, to mitigate ocular morbidity.
