Background:

  • Glaucoma filtering surgery, including trabeculectomy, is a common procedure to manage intraocular pressure.
  • Late-onset endophthalmitis is a rare but severe complication that can occur months or years after glaucoma surgery.

Observation:

  • This study reviewed four cases of enucleated eyes due to late-onset endophthalmitis after glaucoma filtering surgery.
  • The interval between surgery and enucleation ranged from one to five years.

Findings:

  • Streptococcal species were identified in all four cases.
  • Histopathology revealed inflammation of the anterior segment, lens, and choroid, with one case showing granulomatous uveitis.
  • Two patients had undergone trabeculectomy with adjunctive mitomycin-C.
