Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Cardiology
  • Interventional Cardiology

Background:

  • Retinal embolism is an infrequent complication of cardiac catheterization.
  • Etiologies include thrombotic, lipidic, and calcific sources.
  • Systemic adverse effects can occur.

Observation:

  • This report presents the first clinical case of retinal embolism caused by cholesterol crystals.
  • The complication arose during diagnostic cardiac catheterization.
  • No systemic adverse effects were observed in this patient.

Findings:

  • Cholesterol crystal embolism can occur as a complication of cardiac catheterization.
  • Retinal embolism from cholesterol crystals may not always lead to systemic complications.
  • Diagnostic cardiac catheterization carries a risk of embolic events.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering cholesterol crystal embolism in retinal artery occlusion post-cardiac catheterization.
  • Suggests that vigilance is required even in diagnostic procedures.
  • Contributes to understanding the spectrum of embolic complications in interventional cardiology.
