Association Areas of the Cortex01:21

Association Areas of the Cortex

10.8K
Association areas are regions of the cerebral cortex that do not have a specific sensory or motor function. Instead, they integrate and interpret information from various sources to enable higher cognitive processes such as memory, learning, and decision-making. Some key association areas include the following:
Prefrontal Association Area: This area is located in the frontal lobe and is involved in planning, decision-making, and moderating social behavior. It connects with primary motor areas,...

Summary

Researchers identified a new frontal cortex region in monkeys controlling vergence and accommodation eye movements. This finding expands our understanding of the frontal eye fields

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Ophthalmology
  • Primate research

Background:

  • Human vision relies on vergence and accommodation for focusing at different distances.
  • The cerebral cortex's role in controlling these coordinated eye movements, known as the 'near response,' is largely unknown.
  • Neurons involved in the near response are located in the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis, which receives input from the frontal eye fields.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of the frontal cortex in controlling vergence and ocular accommodation.
  • To identify specific cortical regions involved in the sensorimotor transformations of the near response.
  • To determine if a region anterior to the saccade-related frontal eye field is involved.

Main Methods:

  • Electrophysiological recordings in rhesus monkeys.

  • Stimulation and recording of neural activity in the frontal cortex.
  • Behavioral analysis of eye movements during tasks requiring vergence and accommodation.
  • Main Results:

    • A region anterior to the saccade-related frontal eye field was found to be active during vergence and accommodation.
    • This region is involved in the sensorimotor transformations necessary for the near response.
    • Evidence suggests this area plays a crucial role in coordinating eye movements for focusing.

    Conclusions:

    • The macaque frontal cortex is involved in controlling all voluntary eye movements, including vergence and accommodation.
    • A specific region anterior to the traditional frontal eye fields is critical for the near response.
    • The definition of the frontal eye fields should be expanded to encompass this newly identified area.
