Summary

Fabricating complete dentures with torus mandibularis is challenging due to thin mucosa and large tori. A new denture design uses soft acrylic flanges and liners to improve fit and function for these patients.

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Prosthodontics
  • Biomaterials

Background:

  • Torus mandibularis poses significant challenges in complete denture fabrication.
  • Thin mucosal coverage over tori compromises denture stability and patient comfort.
  • Undersized impression trays and dentures are common due to torus interference.

Observation:

  • The torus mandibularis anatomy can impede the complete seating of impression trays.
  • Normal occlusal loads are poorly tolerated by the thin mucosa overlying the torus.
  • Large tori can physically obstruct the placement of a complete denture.

Findings:

  • A novel mandibular complete denture design was fabricated.
  • The design incorporates a combination of soft acrylic flanges.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Soft acrylic liners were integrated into the denture base.
  • Implications:

    • This new denture design may offer improved stability and comfort for patients with torus mandibularis.
    • The use of soft acrylic components could enhance load distribution and mucosal tolerance.
    • Further clinical evaluation is warranted to confirm the efficacy of this prosthetic approach.
