Insights
Pediatric heart attack (myocardial infarction) is more common than previously thought. This paper details frequent causes including congenital coronary artery anomalies, stenosis, thrombosis, and trauma.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Pediatric Medicine
- Medical Research
Context:
- Pediatric myocardial infarction is an underrecognized clinical issue.
- Understanding the etiology of heart attacks in children is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.
Purpose:
- To identify and discuss the most frequent causes of heart infarct in the pediatric population.
- To raise awareness among clinicians regarding the diverse etiologies of pediatric myocardial infarction.
Summary:
- Congenital anomalies of coronary arteries, particularly anomalous origin of the left coronary artery, are primary causes.
- Other significant causes include post-inflammatory and post-operative stenosis, coronary thrombosis, embolism, spasm, metabolic diseases, and heart trauma.
Impact:
- Highlights the need for increased vigilance and diagnostic consideration of heart attacks in children.
- Provides a comprehensive overview of pediatric myocardial infarction causes for healthcare professionals.
- Aids in developing targeted prevention and management strategies for pediatric cardiovascular events.
Abstract:
Heart infarct in children seems to be more common than it is recognized. In the paper we discussed the most frequent causes of heart infarct as: congenital anomalies of coronary arteries (first of all anomalous origin of the left coronary artery), their post-inflammatory and post-operative stenosis, coronary thrombosis and embolism, coronary spasm, metabolic and proliferative diseases, coronary insufficiency, and the other ones (e.g. heart trauma).
