Summary

Clinical medicine often involves uncertain event timing. We developed Tzolkin, a temporal query system, to manage this temporal indeterminacy and integrate it with temporal abstraction for better decision support.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Informatics
  • Computer Science

Background:

  • Temporal indeterminacy is prevalent in clinical medicine, where event times are often imprecise.
  • Clinical decision support systems require robust methods to handle this temporal uncertainty.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a foundational model for supporting temporal indeterminacy in clinical data.
  • To integrate temporal indeterminacy support with temporal abstraction mechanisms for enhanced clinical decision support.

Main Methods:

  • Implementation of a temporal query system named Tzolkin.
  • Integration of Tzolkin's temporal indeterminacy support with a temporal abstraction mechanism.

Main Results:

  • Tzolkin provides extensive support for temporal indeterminacies common in clinical medicine.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The integrated system offers a powerful approach for managing both temporal indeterminacy and temporal abstraction.
  • Conclusions:

    • The Tzolkin system and its integration with temporal abstraction offer a valuable solution for handling temporal uncertainty in clinical decision support.
    • This approach enhances the capability of systems reasoning with imprecise clinical event data.
