Summary

Vigorous physical activity significantly increases the risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage, a type of brain bleed. While the risk is elevated during intense exercise, most subarachnoid hemorrhages do not stem from this cause.

Background:

  • Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a critical neurological condition.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between physical activity and the risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based case-control study was conducted in King County, Washington.
  • 149 patients with incident spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage and matched controls were interviewed.
  • Standardized interviews assessed physical activity, and conditional logistic regression and case cross-over analyses were performed.

Main Results:

  • Engaging in vigorous physical activity at the time of subarachnoid hemorrhage was associated with a significantly increased relative risk (RR=11.6).
