Summary

Post-cataract surgery keratomycosis, a fungal eye infection, can occur. Early antifungal treatment is crucial for a positive prognosis, though some severe cases may require evisceration.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Mycology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Cataract surgery is a common procedure with a low risk of complications.
  • Keratomycosis, a fungal infection of the cornea, can rarely occur postoperatively.
  • Prompt diagnosis and treatment are essential for managing fungal keratitis.

Observation:

  • This retrospective study reviewed 8 patients who developed keratomycosis after cataract surgery.
  • The causative fungal species identified were primarily Aspergillus fumigatus (7 cases) and Aspergillus flavus (1 case).
  • Patients received medical treatment with antifungal agents.

Findings:

  • Six out of eight patients achieved resolution of fungal keratitis with medical management.
  • Two patients with severe keratomycosis ultimately required evisceration of the eye.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Culture analysis confirmed Aspergillus species as the predominant pathogens.
  • Implications:

    • Fungal keratitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of corneal ulcers following cataract surgery.
    • Early initiation of appropriate antifungal therapy significantly impacts the prognosis of post-cataract surgery keratomycosis.
    • Collagen shields soaked in amphotericin B represent a potentially effective therapeutic option for managing these infections.
