Summary

Patients with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) exhibit blunted hormonal responses to meta-chlorophenylpiperazine (mCPP). This study suggests serotonin receptor hyporesponsivity in the HPA axis may be an OCD trait marker.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Psychiatry
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is linked to altered neuroendocrine function.
  • Previous research suggests serotonin (5-HT) receptor dysregulation in OCD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To replicate findings on blunted cortisol and prolactin responses to mCPP in OCD patients.
  • To investigate the role of serotonin receptor sensitivity in OCD symptomatology.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized double-blind study administering mCPP (0.5 mg/kg) to 34 drug-naive/free OCD patients and 18 healthy controls.
  • Measurement of cortisol and prolactin levels post-administration.
  • Assessment of OCD symptom exacerbation.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • OCD patients showed significantly blunted cortisol and prolactin responses to mCPP compared to controls.
  • mCPP did not significantly exacerbate obsessive-compulsive symptoms in OCD patients.
  • Results suggest serotonin (5-HT) receptor hyporesponsivity in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.

Conclusions:

  • Hyporesponsivity of 5-HT receptors in the HPA axis may serve as a biological trait marker for OCD.
  • This hyporesponsivity may not be directly implicated in the disorder's symptom expression.
