Summary

Female patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) exhibit significantly reduced exercise capacity compared to healthy women. This impaired physical function may be linked to difficulties reaching target heart rates during maximal exertion.

Background:

  • Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is characterized by severe fatigue, muscle pain, and weakness, leading to significant functional impairment.
  • This study investigates exercise capacity in a large group of female CFS patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate and compare the exercise capacity of female patients with CFS against sedentary control subjects.
  • To identify potential limitations in achieving maximal physical exertion in CFS patients.

Main Methods:

  • Maximal exercise testing on a bicycle ergometer was conducted for CFS patients and matched controls.
  • Maximal effort was defined by respiratory quotient (≥1.0) and age-predicted heart rate (≥85%); data analyzed statistically.
