The operation of subcutaneous mastectomy is evolving as an alternative to simple mastectomy for diseases of the breast parenchyma where preservation of the skin capsule is thought possible. Simple mastectomy is a mutilating procedure, cosmetically unacceptable to both patient and surgeon.
