Background:

Traumatic sternoclavicular joint instability is uncommon.
Current treatments often restrict early rehabilitation.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the efficacy of Balser plates for surgical treatment of sternoclavicular joint instability.
To assess the potential for early functional aftercare with this method.

Main Methods:

Retrospective analysis of eight patients treated with Balser plates between 1996 and 1998.
Included seven anterior and one posterior sternoclavicular dislocations.
Follow-up data assessed using the Constant Score.

Seven of eight patients were available for follow-up.

The Constant Score averaged 89 +/- 6.6 (range 84-100).

Conclusions:

Balser plates provide a viable surgical alternative for sternoclavicular joint instability.
This technique facilitates early functional rehabilitation and yields high patient satisfaction.
