Magnetocardiography (MCG) reveals that rapid autonomic nervous system adjustments do not significantly alter QT dispersion. However, deep breathing and changes in ventricular loading impact these measurements.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of rapid cardiovascular autonomic nervous adjustments on QT dispersion using MCG.
  • To compare MCG-derived QT dispersion with traditional ECG measurements under various physiological stresses.

Main Methods:

  • Ten healthy male volunteers underwent autonomic stress tests including deep breathing, Valsalva maneuver, handgrip, hyperventilation, cold pressor test, and mental stress.

  • QT intervals measured via computer algorithm; QT dispersion calculated as max-min or standard deviation of QTpeak and QTend intervals.

    • A significant increase in magnetic QT(end) dispersion was observed during the Valsalva maneuver's bradycardia phase (p<0.05).
    • Other autonomic tests, including the cold pressor test, showed no significant effect on magnetic QT dispersion. Magnetic and electric QT intervals correlated well, but dispersion measures did not.

    Conclusions:

    • Rapid autonomic tone changes do not significantly modify magnetic QT dispersion.
    • Maneuvers involving deep respiratory efforts and altered ventricular loading can affect QT dispersion measurements.
    • MCG provides accurate assessment of QT intervals, but dispersion is sensitive to respiratory and loading conditions.
