Individuals with affective disorders experienced more obstetric complications, including being small for gestational age and bleeding during pregnancy. These complications may contribute to the risk of developing depressive disorders later in life.

Area of Science:

  • Perinatal Psychiatry
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Obstetrics

Background:

  • Affective disorders, such as depression, are prevalent mental health conditions.
  • Understanding risk factors for affective disorders is crucial for early intervention and prevention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between affective disorders and obstetric complications.
  • To determine if individuals with depression experience a higher incidence of adverse birth outcomes compared to healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study design was employed, comparing birth records of patients diagnosed with early-onset depression to matched healthy controls.
  • Data were prospectively collected and included matched variables such as gender, birth timing, parity, maternal age, and marital status.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Depressive patients were significantly more likely to be small for their gestational age (22% vs. 1%) and to have experienced at least one obstetric complication (85% vs. 60%).
  • While no specific brain-damaging obstetric complication was significantly more prevalent, bleeding during gestation was more common in the depressive group.
  • Average birthweight was slightly lower (200g) in the depressive group, though not statistically significant.

Conclusions:

  • Developmental deficits, evidenced by lower birthweight and gestational age, may increase the risk for affective disorders.
  • Severe obstetric complications with brain-damaging potential are unlikely to be a primary risk factor for affective disorders, though prenatal lesions may play a role in some cases.
