Malignant melanoma in the parotid gland is rare, often metastatic from head/neck skin cancers. Prognosis is poor, but some patients achieve long-term survival after surgery.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Malignant melanomas are uncommon in the parotid gland.
  • Most parotid gland melanomas are metastases from cutaneous head and neck primaries.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review clinicopathologic features of malignant melanoma involving the parotid gland.
  • To analyze patient demographics, treatment, and outcomes for parotid gland melanoma.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 12 parotid gland melanoma cases (1980-1999).
  • Analysis of patient data including presentation, primary tumor site, treatment, and follow-up.

Main Results:

  • 11 of 12 patients presented with neck masses; 9 had a head region primary.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Lymph node metastasis was common (ipsilateral cervical and intraparotid).
  • Prognosis was poor, with 6 deaths within a median of 11 months, but 2 patients survived long-term.
  • Conclusions:

    • Parotid gland melanoma is frequently metastatic from cutaneous head region primaries.
    • Lymph node metastasis is a significant factor in parotid gland melanoma.
    • While prognosis is generally poor, long-term survival is possible in select cases.
