Background:

  • Spontaneous pneumothorax (SP) is a rare condition in children.
  • Adolescents are the primary demographic affected by SP.
  • Underlying pulmonary abnormalities like bullae or blebs are common in pediatric SP.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the clinical features, radiographic findings, and surgical indications for spontaneous pneumothorax in children.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of different treatment modalities for pediatric SP.
  • To determine the role of imaging, particularly CT scans, in diagnosing SP and guiding treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 16 pediatric patients with SP admitted between July 1994 and June 1999.
  • Review of presenting features, radiographic abnormalities, and surgical interventions.
  • Analysis of treatment outcomes, including recurrence rates and effectiveness of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS).

  • All 16 patients were adolescents (12-17 years old).

  • VATS with abrasive pleurodesis is a safe and effective treatment for pediatric SP, with no recurrences observed.
  • Surgical intervention, even for the first episode, is indicated when subpleural blebs are identified by high-resolution CT scans.
