Summary

This case study highlights acute pulmonary echinococcosis, a rare condition presenting as lung nodules and eosinophilia. Early diagnosis and albendazole treatment led to full recovery, suggesting prompt suspicion for hydatid disease.

Area of Science:

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Parasitology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Echinococcosis, commonly known as hydatid disease, is a parasitic infection usually diagnosed in its chronic stages.
  • Pulmonary involvement is a known manifestation, but acute presentations are infrequently reported in medical literature.

Observation:

  • A 69-year-old male presented with acute pulmonary echinococcosis.
  • Diagnostic imaging revealed multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules.
  • Laboratory findings included eosinophilia and positive antibodies for Echinococcus granulosus.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography (CT) scan of the thorax confirmed multiple pulmonary nodules.
  • Peripheral blood tests indicated significant eosinophilia.
  • Serological tests detected antibodies specific to Echinococcus granulosus.

Implications:

  • This case represents the first described instance of acute pulmonary echinococcosis.
  • The findings suggest that unexplained eosinophilia, particularly with co-occurring pulmonary nodules, warrants suspicion for acute hydatid disease.
  • Prompt diagnosis and treatment with albendazole resulted in complete resolution of pulmonary lesions and normalization of blood counts, underscoring treatment efficacy.
